I watch as the little girl walks Waylon around the cones I had set out for this lesson. After watching intently for a few minutes, I had finally decided. Bring him over here I call to the girl just as she was about to go around the cones again. When they do get here, I ask the 6 year old You ready to try to trot? and smile as her face lights up in a huge grin, showing her two missing front teeth. I was waiting for you to ask that I read from her lips. See, I told you I can read minds I tell her as I rub the gelding's neck. I watch as the small child giggles. Here's what you do I say getting her attention again. You will hold the reins as you've always done. If you need to, hold onto the horn with your other hand. Try to use your legs to move with the horse. That'll help you keep your balance and take some of the bounce off of Waylon's gaits. I say and watch the girl bend down to pat his neck when I say the the horse's name. Ready? I ask. Yes mam' I watch her say, smiling and laughing to my self as she tells me that again. Now just cluck and kick him until you get him going. And remember what I said I remind her. I watch as she does what I said. After a few seconds full of clucking and kicking, the old gelding sighs and seems to finally give in as he moves into his slow, lazy trot. Your doing it I call out to her and I watch her bounce up and down on Waylon's back. She looks proud and confident, doing everything I told her to do. She isn't where I want her to soon be, but she's getting there. I watch as a car drives up and watch the little girls mother step out and walk up to the fence. I walk up to meet her as the woman's daughter continues to trot around on the geldings back. How's she doing? I watch her say, smiling as she watches her daughter ride around the pen. She's been doing great. She'll be galloping across the pasture in no time I answer. I look down at my clock and see that the lesson was supposed to be over almost ten minutes ago. Ready to go untack and groom him? I call to the child and watch her make her way over to me. Yes mam' I watch her say to me again and smile. I help her dismount and let her lead the gelding over to the barn. Me and her mother following behind.
